There’s so Much More to Design

One of the passions that dictate my free time lately is learning about the infrastructure of earthships. If you don’t know what those are there’s a community in Taos, New Mexico that started a community using self sustaining housing. Michael Reynolds started experimenting with creating structures out of earth that were efficient and used minimal or renewable energy. The idea is that a poor hippy can have a home because the main expense with earthships is the labor. So if you have a lot of friends then you can all help build each other’s houses with earth and recycled materials.

This curiosity led me down the road to look into another route of design using AutoCAD. One day I want to design my own earthship infrastructure for a future home. Especially now that there’s a worldwide wood shortage where cheap materials like sand, clay, straw and water are extremely useful and affordable building materials.

There are so many options to designing new things in the world such as buildings, interior design, jewelry, and too many design categories to list. Design goes beyond solely being artistic, but also incorporates the logic and functionality of what you want to create.

I’m in awe at how much logic it takes to make new creations come into being that are sustainable. I’m impressed by those taking on the design challenges on different societal levels such as housing.
